An Unexpected Oasis

Exclusively for Your Private Group

Book a private morning retreat with Inner Story Retreats at The Japanese Garden in Van Nuys, CA for your group of up to 20 participants.

Available on Saturdays at 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, the retreat includes a wellness program led by certified sound therapist and Yin yoga facilitator Diana Osberg.

You’ll have exclusive access to a beautiful 6.5 acre Japanese garden, with time to walk and meditate prior to and following the wellness program.

Soothing Sounds of Nature

in a Traditional Shoin

At the far end of the lake at the base of a waterfall, you’ll find the Shoin – where your group will gather for the wellness program.

Here in this traditional, open-air building, you’ll delight in the sounds of flowing water and songbirds and feel the gentle breeze from the lake.

Breathing, Yoga & a Soundbath

for a Deeply Relaxing & Restorative Morning

Diana will lead your group in a mindfulness practice and a series of restorative Yin yoga poses with sound therapy, using crystal singing pyramids and a crystal tuning fork.

The wellness program concludes with a heavenly soundbath. You’ll be immersed in the deeply healing vibrations of crystal and Tibetan singing bowls, gongs, and other sacred instruments.

Mindful Breathing

The breath is the bridge between the body and the mind. Conscious, or yogic, breathing (Pranayama) is an active meditation that keeps you in the present moment, which is where life is. Pranayama is so good for your overall health. The conscious awareness of your breath influences the mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual states and promotes circulation and hormonal balance in the body. Practicing how you inhale and exhale activates the natural flow of energy and your parasympathetic nervous system to help you feel calmer.

Yin Yoga

Yin Yoga encourages the practitioner to connect body, heart, mind, and spirit in a focused awareness by finding stillness at the edge of discomfort, resting with “what is” and learning to become open to and accepting of any sensations that may surface. The practice consists of a series of long-held, passive floor poses (asanas) and seeks to mindfully elongate and lubricate the deep connective tissues between the muscles and the fascia throughout the body. The intention is to increase circulation and flexibility in the joints and bones and to regulate the flow of energy (Prana).

Sound Therapy

The power of sound to heal the human body, mind, emotions, and spirit has been known for millennia. The ancient modality of using vibratory sound for healing works on the cellular level to remove energetic blocks, release emotional trauma, promote deep meditation, and improve concentration. Sound vibrations of sacred crystal instruments align with the crystalline properties of the human body and are especially powerful in releasing blocked energy and providing a healing effect on body, mind, emotions, and spirit.

With mindfulness, you can establish yourself in the present in order to touch the wonders of life that are available in that moment. ~ Thich Nhat Hanh

About The Japanese Garden

We’re grateful to have exclusive access to The Japanese Garden in the heart of the San Fernando Valley.
It’s an unexpected oasis on 6.5-acres, ideal for meditation and quiet walks.

Waterfalls throughout the garden delight the senses and add symbolic meaning in the garden. The three levels of the waterfall symbolize Heaven, Man, and Earth. The three states of water represented are falling, flowing, and still. “Be soft in your practice. Think of the method as a fine silvery stream, not a raging waterfall. Follow the stream, have faith in its course. It will go on its own way, meandering here, trickling there.” ~ Sheng Yen

You may discover some of the tranquil meditation spots, like this one (pictured), tucked away in the trees on a gentle knoll. Follow the Plover Bird path, with its stones arranged in this shore bird’s flight pattern, and it will lead you to a wisteria-covered arbor with benches. A sukiya style arbor overlooking the lake, was designed as a place to rest, meditate, and view the garden.

The Shoin Building will be our home for the wellness program. At the far end of the lake, it adjoins the teahouse and projects over the lake at the base of a waterfall.

Shoin was the residential dwelling developed for aristocrats, upper class monks, and samurai during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries.

Here’s the space inside the Shoin where your group will gather and share a healing practice, a place where gentle breezes from the lake lift the spirit, where the sounds of flowing water and songbirds delight the soul, where you can connect with your highest, best self and open yourself up to the person you know you are. This is traditionally a place of community where you can share your Divine spirit.

What to Expect: Retreat Schedule

Please plan to arrive at 9:00 am to enjoy The Japanese Garden, stroll along the meandering pathways, and meditate. There are many beautiful meditation spots hidden near the paths.

Since this is a private event, you’ll have the garden for your exclusive use. You can feel comfortable to sit in peace without being interrupted by tourists.

The wellness program begins at 10:00 am in the Shoin Building at the far end of the lake. Enter the building 5 minutes before our start time, so you can settle in on your yoga mat.

We’ll begin with some mindful breathing exercises (Pranayama) to bring you into the present, ground you, and open up space.

Our Pranayama will transition into a restorative Yin yoga practice to activate your energy systems, detoxify your organs, and release blocked energy. This practice is for all levels of ability, including beginners. Don’t worry if you’ve never done yoga before. You can do this. It’s gentle, inclusive, and forgiving.

During the yoga session, Diana will apply sound therapy to help open and balance the chakras.

Then you’ll enjoy a sublime soundbath, with crystal and Tibetan singing bowls, gongs, and other sacred instruments to bring you deeper into a meditative state.

The wellness program ends at 12:15 pm to allow time for your group to revisit the garden before departing the grounds by 1:00 pm.

The lotus bud waits
To open in still water.
Just let it unfold.

My first sound bath session was AMAZING. I have never experienced anything like it before. The sound just resonated throughout my entire body and I couldn’t believe how soothing and relaxing it could be.

Diana accompanied one of my yoga classes with a sound bath. It was an amazing experience for me and my students. I look forward to working with her again!

Yoga Teacher

I cannot even begin to express how much I loved the live sound bath that Diana has provided for us. I have never experienced anything of its kind before. I was so relaxed that I even eased into a restful sleep. I felt the vibrations of it and could even “see” colors with my eyes shut. It put me into a phase of relaxation that I truly needed in order to destress from life in general. I cannot thank Diana enough for helping make that happen with this beautiful art of ‘painting colors with sound.’

Thank you so much for the Reiki Healing Session with the singing bowls. I thoroughly enjoyed the session and I feel so much better the next day. Your energy, time, and efforts are very much appreciated. I just love the environment and the power of these crystals as well as your soothing touch to the whole thing. My friend also enjoyed the session and he felt a difference! I appreciate you being patient because it was our first time to be in this place.
